"Seattle mainstay Tennis is best known as an accomplished painter, with shows in museums nationwide, but on the (now only three) occasions that he’s turned to make brood-folk LPs, he dives in deep. In our issue 61 review of Three Leaf Clover in 2006, Marcel Feldmar thought of Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and Paul Westerberg, but I Do is like Destroyer/New Porns’ Dan Bejar drawling elegiac homages to The Rolling Stones’ “Moonlight Mile,” especially “Hymn” and “Two Songs in One.” With just his sonorous piano, acoustic (and fuzz electric on the outlier, “July”), and gentle percussion, he conveys multitudes like shadings in his canvases—although he rouses most devilishly on “Bill Callahaning,” a waltz so spirited it’s nearly like Jeremy Enigk’s Return of the Frog Queen, only lyrically clever and bluesy instead of wailing-heated. He does–indeed."
